The Job
Design and build a multi-site system for a legendary restaurant group
The Challenge
ESR has 12 restaurant concepts with 19 separate locations (and counting) across four cities.
Implementation
We wrote, designed, and built an interconnected, multi-site system that’s easy for restaurant managers to edit and shares data across multiple brand websites, complete with online ordering & reservations integrations, and a searchable, filterable interactive mapping system.
Performance
People are hungry, so the site needs to load quickly. We chose to build the site using Sanity.io CMS and Next.js, allowing us to achieve blistering speeds on desktop and mobile devices.
Search
With 19 restaurant locations, each with their own menus, finding a particular dish would be virtually impossible. We chose the Algolia search service to provide lighting-fast search results about not just locations, but individual food items.
Custom API
We built a custom API to share information between websites so that all the satellite sites (e.g. Tavolata) pull their data from the main Ethan Stowell website. This means the menus, hours, etc. will always be up to date in both places, without requiring restaurant managers to keep multiple databases up-to-date.
The API feeds a block-based component that collects and displays events, news, and social media posts. This feed can be customized and embedded where desired, on both the main site, and satellite sites.
The Map
The map spans multiple states with multiple locations and is big enough that it deserves its own case study. You can try out the live map experience on the Ethan Stowell website!
